Dry Ridge Roofing in Cinderford

Why Ridge Tiles Come Loose

Mortar bedding on ridges and verges cracks and washes out, which is why loose ridge tiles are such a common call-out in Cinderford. A dry ridge or dry verge system fixes each tile mechanically, so there is no mortar left to fail.

For decades ridge and hip tiles were laid on a bed of sand and cement. The trouble is that mortar cannot flex, while a roof moves with heat and wind, so over the years the bedding cracks, frost opens the cracks wider and pieces wash into the gutter. Eventually a ridge tile rocks or lifts in a storm. Since the 2014 revision of BS 5534, the British Standard for slating and tiling, mortar on its own no longer counts as an adequate fixing for ridge and hip tiles.

A dry ridge system replaces the mortar with fixings. A timber ridge batten is set on adjustable brackets, a breathable roll is dressed over the top courses of tiles, and each ridge tile is screwed down and clipped to the next with a sealed union. Hips are done the same way, finished with a hip iron at the bottom, and verges get interlocking caps instead of a mortar fillet.

Pricing

What Affects Your Dry Ridge Quote?

No two jobs are quite the same, so we price yours once we have seen it. These are the things that make the biggest difference to the figure on your quote.

01

Length of Ridge & Hips

A simple gable roof has one ridge. A fully hipped roof can add four hips, each with its own batten, roll and fixings.

02

Reusing or Replacing Tiles

Undamaged ridge tiles are reused. Broken or discontinued ones need replacing, and tracking down an older profile can take some sourcing.

03

Dry Verge at the Same Time

Adding dry verge to the gable ends is often worth doing while the access is already up, but it adds materials and labour.

04

Access to the Ridge

Ridges on bungalows can sometimes be reached with roof ladders. Taller houses, steep pitches or tight side access usually call for scaffold.

FAQs

Dry Ridge Questions Answered

Do you cover Cinderford?

Yes. Cinderford in Gloucestershire is one of the areas we cover from our base at 70 Stalls Farm Road, Droitwich, along with nearby Lydney, Newent and Stonehouse. Call 0808 143 7154 with your postcode and we will arrange a time to look at the job.

Is a dry ridge better than repointing with mortar?

For most tiled roofs, yes. Mortar alone no longer meets the British Standard for fixing ridge tiles, and fresh mortar on an old roof tends to crack along the same lines as before. A dry ridge holds each tile with screws and clips, flexes with the roof and does not need repointing in future.

Can you keep my existing ridge tiles?

Usually. Most ridge tiles survive being lifted, and once the old mortar is cleaned off they go straight back on the new system. Any that crack or were already broken are replaced with the closest match we can find, which keeps the roof looking as it did from the street.

How long does a dry ridge installation take?

The ridge on a typical semi or terraced house is usually completed within a day after the scaffold or roof ladders are set up. Hipped roofs, long ridges and adding dry verge to both gables take longer, and wet or very windy weather can push the work back because we will not lay the roll on wet tiles.

What makes one dry ridge quote higher than another?

The total length of ridge and hips, the access needed to reach them and whether the tiles can be reused are the main factors. Adding dry verge to the gables, or replacing rotten battens found under the old ridge, increases the work, and both are shown separately on your quote.

How can I get a quote for a dry ridge?

Ring us or use the quote form. A roofer will look at the ridge, hips and verges first, ideally from the roof itself, because loose tiles and soft battens are hard to judge from below. We then give you a price for the work your roof actually needs.
